Ms. Evelyn Kappeler highlights the adolescent health and health care priorities of OAH – particularly the Office’s initiatives to reduce teen pregnancy. She discusses the OAH’s efforts to reduce racial and ethnic disparities in adolescent health. Dr. Plax speaks about the innovative and very comprehensive approach that “The Spot” has implemented to address and meet the unique health and health care challenges of adolescents inone major U.S. city. Dr. Plax also shares some of her “lessons learned” and best practices.

Dr. Seifer provides an overview of community-based research and highlights some of common challenges with which community-based researchers contend and highlights several recommendations to bolster the communitybased researcher community. Ms. Damio highlights successes, challenges and lessons learned in building and sustaining community-based research infrastructure, to conduct and act upon the findings of health disparities research. Her remarks include recommendations for supporting community-based organizations in leadership roles in health disparities research.

Dr. Ofili’s presentation focuses on the funding challenges facing African-American and other under-represented racial and ethnic minority researchers and explains why – not only in the name of equality, but also in the name of health equity – these challenges need to be surmounted.
