Numerous types of African-American health providers and health care executives play pivotal roles in the health care continuum. During this session, panelists introduce the audience to myriad African-American health providers - including physicians, dentists, nurses, hospice care providers, mental health practitioners and health care executives - address the successes of and challenges confronting the provider pipeline. Panelists also highlight the importance of workforce diversity efforts

Diversity in the Healthcare Workforce

Dr. Sullivan provides an overview that defines who the African-American health provider includes and why it is critically important to bolster the pipelines of all African-American health providers. Dr. Sullivan also provides a snapshot of how many African-American health providers currently are practicing or are in training in the nation today.

Dr. Riley discusses the efforts being undertaken to bolster the pipeline of African-American providers and the role that African-American providers play in helping to close myriad health workforce and health care gaps.

Physician Scientist Training Program. Temple University School of Medicine .

Dr. Williams discusses the importance of meeting the future health workforce needs and outline the critical necessity of working with young people long before they reach college to encourage and mentor them to pursue careers in health-related fields. Dr. Williams also focuses on the challenges and success of the Physician Scientist Training Program.

Dr. Lewis explores the critically important role that African-American nurses play in the health and well-being of African Americans and other people of color, and l highlights workforce needs that are unique to nurses.

Ms. Myla Moss
Director of Congressional Relations and Regulatory Affairs
American Dental Education Association.

Ms. Moss highlights the number of African-American dentists in the nation, hone in on the workforce issues, especially shortages, that affect African-American dentists, and explore the dental and oral health issues confronting African-Americans and other people of color.

National Association of Health Services Executives

Mr. Miller explores the role that African-American health care executives play in the health and health care of African Americans and other people of color and highlights the role that health service executives are playing in efforts to support African-American health providers.
